This Line is Offensive

How does a true football fan distinguish himself from the legions of pretenders? In the old days it was simple; you were considered a football expert if you discussed wide receivers. But that was then. The passing game (and the world) has changed. Now, when stats, drive charts, and other data is but a click away, how does the true fan showcase his knowledge at the water cooler? Talking about quarterbacks, running backs, or members of the other so-called "skill positions," is old school. The new-millennium expert discusses... Offensive Linemen.

Why offensive lines? Football, more than any of the other American sports, is a team game. Even a team possessing a brilliant quarterback is stuck if they lack a strong offensive line, good receiving corps, and a solid running back. Unlike baseball, which is often viewed as a series of one-on-one matchups, every player must be present for every play on the gridiron. Rarely in football do you see players who carry a sub-par team; this stands in stark contrast to basketball, where such an occurrence is commonplace. (Garnett's Timberwolves, Jordan's Wizards, and Wade's Heat come to mind.)

Offensive linemen must do their job correctly on every play in order for their team to succeed. Whether by stopping the pass-rush, or blocking on a running play, every down depends on the actions of the O-line.

However, the line is only as strong as its weakest link. This is why we cannot grade individual linesmen, but rather assess an entire team.

Looking over the stat sheets on Pro Football Reference (an invaluable resource), one might think that no stats exist to measure the contributions of the offensive line. However, this is not the case.

Think about it; what are the duties of an offensive linesmen?

1) To block for the running backs
2) Prevent the quarterback from getting sacked.

Therefore, we can grade offensive lines by how well they accomplish each of these two feats. We can rank each team with only two stats: Rushing Yards Per Attempt and Sacks Per Attempt.

As part of their seminal work The Hidden Game of Football, Bob Carroll, John Thorn, and Pete Palmer created a grading system for each facet of the offensive line.

Rush Grade = 120*(RYA / 5.75)
Sack Grade = 1.20*(100 - (4*(Sk% - 1.7)))
Total Grade = (Rush Att / Total Att) * Rush Grade + (Pass Att / Total Att) * Pass Grade

This grade makes it easier to compare run-protection and pass-protection. Also, it gives us a simple score that we can use to easily answer the age-old question "Who is the best?"

Let's take a second to learn the names of the players on the five best O-lines of 2009:

#1 Tennessee Titans:
C Kevin Mawae
G Eugene Amano*
G Jake Scott*
T Michael Roos*
T David Stewart*
*On the roster for 2010

Notes: Look for Chris Johnson to have another huge year rushing behind 2009's best line.

#2 New Orleans Saints:
C Jonathan Goodwin*
G Carl Nicks*
G Jahri Evans*
T Jermon Bushrod*
T Jon Stinchcomb*

Notes: Every piece of the Super Bowl winning line returns for what should make a fascinating 2010 season. Drew Brees should receive some excellent protection next year.

#3 New England Patriots
C Dan Koppen*
G Logan Mankins*^
G Stephen Neal*
T Matt Light*
T Sebastien Vollmer*
^ Pro Bowl Selection

Notes: It's a Belichick team, what do you expect? Unless you live in New England, you probably won't recognize any of these names, but this group made sure Tom Brady was one of the most protected quarterbacks of 2009.

#4 Indianapolis Colts
C Jeff Saturday*
G Mike Pollack*
G Kyle DeVan*
T Charlie Johnson*
T Ryan Diem*

Notes: In his record third MVP season, Peyton Manning was the best protected quarterback of 2009.

#5 Dallas Cowboys
C Andre Gurode*
G Kyle Kosier*
G Leonard Davis*^
T Doug Free*
T Marc Columbo*

Notes: Only the Titans and Cowboys had a grade of 100+ in both categories, rushing and passing.

Football - How To Know If You're A Football Fanatic

Everyone knows that NFL football is the most popular sport in America. For that matter one could argue a case that football is the most popular sport in the world. It makes no difference what time of year it is to any football fan. True football fans live for any news on the NFL year round. Here is an amusing list of how to know if you're really a true football fanatic or not.

NFL Pre-Season Football

You know you're a real football fanatic if you watch every minute of televised NFL pre-season football. It doesn't matter to you if the games don't count in the standings. This is football! How else will you ever know if that street free agent quarterback from Southwest Montana State will become the next Joe Montana?

NFL Regular Season

This is what it's all about for the football fanatics. No one should plan anything that would interrupt you from watching the big games. With the remote in one hand and plenty of food and drink in the other, it's game time!

Clothing and Apparel

Any real NFL fan is going to have their favorite teams clothing on. This must have list includes hats, shirts, ties, socks, shorts, sweatshirts, winter parkas and pajamas.

Souvenirs

This is where football fans get really serious about their teams. You must have an autographed team football on display. You will also need to have an autographed authentic NFL football jersey of your favorite player hanging on the wall in a frame. Other popular souvenir items include glasses and cups with your team's logo on them. Optional items that most football fans have may include trash-cans, clocks, lamps, outdoor displays, shot glasses, posters, golf balls and bag, bumper decals, grill covers and license plate frames, all with your team logo on them.

Fantasy Football

When you're not spending time in front of the TV or computer watching an NFL football game, then you're playing fantasy football in local league. You constantly go over the stats and try to make trades to help your team win.

Computer

Don't forget to have your favorite football team's logo on your computer screen saver.

TV

You know you're a true NFL football fanatic when you go out and buy a new TV for the Super Bowl. You want to be sure you can have a new big screen for your party before the big game.

Super Bowl

The best day of the year! It's finally come time for the biggest football event of the year. You know you're a true fan if you sit and watch all 12 hours of the pre-game show. Nothing short of a medical emergency will keep you from missing a minute of the action, no matter whether your favorite team is involved or not.

Others know you're a football fanatic by the size of the Super Bowl party you have every year. This is your big moment and you're not going to blow it. Even after the big game is over, all is not lost. The season is not over just because the Super Bowl ended. You know that in a week the Pro-Bowl game will be on!

McNabb Redskins Jersey Buying Guide - How to Find Cheap McNabb Redskins Jerseys

Any self-respecting Redskins fan will know exactly where he/she was when they heard the news: Donovan McNabb, the eternal foe from Philly, is now a Redskin! But as the euphoria wore off, a realization quickly came over me. My life will be incomplete until I have a no. 5 Skins jersey hanging in my closet. Here are a few tips to buying--or creating--a Skins Mcnabb jersey before the start of the season to make sure you aren't left out of the fun.

Tip No.1: Pre-Order Baby!

If you've got some extra moolah lying around, than you can pre-order a jersey RIGHT NOW for under a hundred dollars. Sources for these include the NFL store--you'll have to slug through a bunch of upselling. Or check out good old Amazon for some great deals from a variety of online outlets.

Tip No.2: The Far East

There's something the NFL doesn't want you to know. Authentic-looking sports jerseys are available at huge discounts in China. How do I know this? My girlfriend got me a Sean Taylor pro bowl jersey a couple years back. (They were going for around 240--she got it for about 40.)

Now it looks great, but you will have to wait a bit. Shipping from China can be a bit..unpredictable. So patience is definitely needed here.

Tip No.3: Do It Yourself

So let's say that you're a cheap old-time Redskins fan with an extra Heath Shuler jersey lying around. (Who knows why you'd have one, but bear with me.) Then I've got a perfect solution that'll cost you less than a dollar.

Procure some masking tape, and simply tape over "SHuler" and then take a Sharpie and write in McNabb. It may not be the most aesthetic thing in the world, but then have you seen the way the Redskins have been playing lately.

IF you don't have a Shuler jersey, check out local D.C. thrift shops or eBay. You might be surprised by what you find--and how much you can save.

NFL Week 9 Point Spread Picks And Best Bets

SUNDAY AFTERNOON 1:00 PM ET

1. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (-3.5) VS. Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals are a different team with Kurt Warner at QB and they have a potentially explosive offense that can put up points in bunches. Of course the key is to keep Warner upright which has been somewhat of a challenge this season but he is ready to go for this one. The Buc's are coming off a demoralizing loss at home against the Jaguars and will be looking to right the ship before the season begins to spiral out of control. To lose to a backup QB like Quinn Gray could have a lasting impact on their psyches however and they might play tight so as not to make the mistakes they did last week which destroyed their chances. The Buc's simply can't score enough to justify giving 3.5 to anyone. Throw in the fact the better-than-average Cardinal offense is getting a head start makes them that much of a better play. The Pick: Arizona Cardinals (-3.5)

2. ATLANTA FALCONS (-3.5) VS. San Francisco 49ers: In a battle of two terrible offensive teams, the extra half point tilts this one in the 49ers' advantage. San Francisco qualifies in a very positive 81-54-1 ATS game scenario that plays on teams that have been especially bad on offense in recent weeks. Basically the belief is that the 'Niners have hit rock bottom on offense and that they will be able to get back on track against a poor Falcons defense. The 49ers have a big advantage in the run game with Frank Gore and the passing attack should get itself going with QB Alex Smith getting more comfortable after coming back from injury. The ATS trend and the player personnel both favor the 49ers and it wouldn't be a surprise if they even won here. THE PICK: 49ers (+3.5)

3. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (-3.5) VS. Jacksonville Jaguars: ********THIS GAME IS ONE OF OUR BEST BETS FOR THE WEEK.

4. TENNESSEE TITANS (-4.5) VS. Carolina Panthers: WE HAVE A STRONG OPINION ON THIS GAME.

5. Cincinnati Bengals (-.5) VS. BUFFALO BILLS: WE HAVE A STRONG OPINION ON THIS GAME.

6. Washington Redskins (-3.5) VS. NEW YORK JETS: The Jets will turn to Kellen Clemens this week in the hopes of sparking the team. That certainly could do the trick for the Jets here but it also could go the other way as this might signal that the white flag has been raised and that the team is playing for next year. A major letdown could then be at hand and things could get ugly against a still motivated, hard-hitting Redskins squad. Surely the 'Skins went back to the drawing board after last week's embarrassment against the Patriots but the fact of the matter is that this team still can't score. The Jets could have trouble scoring also as star WR Laverneaous Coles is likely to miss this game with a concussion. Either way this game has too many question marks to touch. THE PICK: PASS

7. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (-2.5) VS. Green Bay Packers: The Packers are in a bad spot here as they are coming off a short week after playing a draining game in Denver on MNF. Green Bay won that game in OT and now they have to go out on the road again to take on the Chiefs in Arrowhead. Kansas City has played much better than anyone could have expected as they have won three in a row and are a strong factor in the AFC West race. The Packers have gone only 1-7 in their last eight in Kansas City and they should have trouble getting up for a second straight road game in a very hostile environment. THE PICK: Kansas City Chiefs (-2)

8. San Diego Chargers (-7.5) VS. Minnesota Vikings: WE HAVE A STRONG OPINION ON THIS GAME.

9. DETROIT LIONS (-3.5) VS. Denver Broncos: The Lions are actually in the playoff hunt this season and their only worry in the weak NFC North right now are the Packers. The Lions are fresh off a road win over the Bears where the defense stepped up and intercepted QB Brian Griese four times. The Broncos on the other hand come off a terrible loss at home on MNF against the Packers in a game they should have won. Awful clock management and play calling by coach Mike Shannahan did them in and so they now must try and save their season on the road. The Broncos match up well with the Lions in that their great secondary led by Pro Bowl CB Champ Bailey should limit the effectiveness o the Detroit passing attack. This game will be won by running the football which both teams do rather evenly. There are scenarios that favor both sides in this game and there is much too uncertainty to make this a worthwhile pick. THE PICK: PASS

SUNDAY AFTERNOON 4:00 PM ET

10. CLEVELAND BROWNS (-1.5) VS. Seattle Seahawks: WE HAVE A STRONG OPINION ON THIS GAME.
11. New England Patriots (-4.5) VS. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: *******THIS GAME IS ONE OF OUR BEST BETS FOR THE WEEK.

12. OAKLAND RAIDERS (-2.5) VS. Houston Texans: **************THIS GAME IS ONE OF OUR BEST BETS FOR THE WEEK.

SUNDAY NIGHT 8:30 PM ET

13. Dallas Cowboys (-3.5) VS. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: ******THIS GAME IS ONE OF OUR BEST BETS FOR THE WEEK.

The 1972 Dolphins: Where are They Now?

As the NFL season comes to a close, the 1972 Miami Dolphins breathe a sigh of relief; another year has passed and, nearly three and a half decades later, they still remain the only professional football team to achieve perfection. Over the years a few teams, the Bears, the Broncos, the Colts, and the Colts yet again, have caused the Dolphins to sweat profusely in the pit of their fins; these teams have come close but no cigar, especially not Don Shula's.

It's safe to say that all members of the 1972 Dolphins have since retired and moved on to other ventures. Some remain in sports, some engage in completely different activities. No matter where they are and what they are doing, the members of this Dolphin's team still holds a place in NFL history...at least for the time being. This makes us think about them, remembering how they were and wondering what they're doing now.

Bob Griese

An All-Star, a Pro Bowler, a six time Dolphin's MVP, Bob Griese was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990. Known more for his leadership than his arm - as he passed a little in some games and a lot in others - Bob led Miami to nine winning seasons.

After retiring from football, Bob went on to support his son Brian's collegiate and professional football careers, stating that watching Brian win the Rose Bowl was one of the greatest moments of this life. In 2000, he and Brian wrote a book called Undefeated, which discussed the Dolphin's perfect season as well as the death of Bob's first wife to breast cancer. Bob is presently an ABC College Football Analyst and recently appeared on the game show Wheel of Fortune.

Don Shula

One of the most recognizable coaches in the entire world of sports, Don Shula began his football career with the Cleveland Browns in 1951 as a cornerback. During his playing days, he played for the Browns, the Baltimore Colts, and the Washington Redskins before turning to coaching. In 1963, at the age of 33, Don made history by becoming the youngest person to ever serve as a head NFL coach. This historical moment was only a preview of things to come.

After coaching the Baltimore Colts from 1963-1969, Don was hired by the Dolphins. He remained as their head coach from 1970-1995, a span of years that is unrivaled. Don currently holds the record for most NFL regular season wins with 328 and most Super Bowl's coached with six. In 1997, in a move that everyone saw coming, Don Shula was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Since retired, Don now lends his name to a chain of restaurants in Florida, Shula's Steakhouse. He also spends time with the Don Shula Foundation, a foundation striving to find a cure for breast cancer. Don formed this organization in 1991 right before his first wife succumbed to the disease.

Lawrence Richard Csonka

In the early 1970's, some men feared the Vietnam draft, and others feared Lawrence Csonka. At 6'3, 235 pounds, he was a running back with the ability to run over - or through - defenders. He was also a great blocker and a great receiver, making him a triple threat on offense. Nominated for five Pro Bowls, Lawrence was All-Pro in 1971, 1972, and 1973. He was named MVP of Super Bowl VIII and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987. In the 1996 NFL Films production of The NFL's 100 Toughest Players, Lawrence claimed the number ten spot.

Since hanging up his cleats, Lawrence has been a motivational speaker, an avid outdoorsman and conservationist, a host of hunting and fishing shows, a General Manager in the United States Football League, and an analyst on American Gladiators. He is currently President and Executive Producer of Zonk! Productions in Lisbon, Ohio and producer and host of a nature program called NAPA's North to Alaska.

Jake Scott

For nine seasons, Jake Scott played in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Redskins. He served as a free safety and a punt returner and made his way to five consecutive Pro Bowls. While playing with the Dolphins, he had 35 interceptions over six seasons, including two in the Dolphin's Perfect Season Super Bowl Victory. Logging 63 return yards in that game as well, Jake was named Super Bowl MVP. In the 1980's, Jake was deemed the Dolphins All-Time Neutralizer by NFL Films . He was inducted into the Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame in 1998. Currently, Jake lives in Hawaii where he is an investor.

Jim Kiick

Forming a duo with Lawrence Csonka, Jim Kiick was the other part of Miami's running game. Known, along with Csonka, as "Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid," Kiick played in Miami from 1968 until 1974. His career was marked by playing in three Super Bowls, and racking up rushing yards. In the Dolphin's record books, Kiick remains listed as the fourth all-time leading rusher.

In later years, his football career was marked by some oddities. These included Kiick and Csonka signing with the World Football League. Kiick eventually came back to the NFL where he was released by the Denver Broncos. As bad luck would have it, this release came on the same day that Kiick saw his marriage end and his house burn down.

In 1996, Kiick was named to the University of Wyoming's Sports Hall of Fame. He is now president of Kiick Sports Promotions, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His agency books former players for special appearances.

Nick Buoniconti

A linebacker who played for the Boston Patriots and the Miami Dolphins, Nick was instrumental in both play and leadership during his career. He was named to the AFL All-star team in 1969 and the Pro Bowl in 1972 and 1973. In the latter year, he set a record by making 162 tackles, 91 of which were unassisted. In 2001, he was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Since retirement, Nick served as President of the US Tobacco Company and was a co-host on the HBO series, Inside the NFL. Over the past two decades, he has been an instrumental figure in the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. He began taking part in this foundation when his son Marc was paralyzed during a 1985 college football game. This foundation has since become one of the leading neurological research centers in the world.

Nick is believed to be the most vocal member of the Perfect Season Miami Dolphins team. He is rumored to lead a champagne toast each year after the lingering undefeated team suffers its first defeat.

Until another team can equal an unblemished record, it's simply bottom's up for Nick and the rest of the 1972 members. The other NFL franchises only hope is to keep on fishing and pray that something, besides a Dolphin, will bite.

Probiotics - A Solution for Bloating, Gas, IBS, Skin Infections, Tooth Decay, Diarrhea and More

If you experience bloating, gas, irritable bowl syndrome, skin infections, vaginal infections or diarrhea, you will want to read more about probiotics and the benefits of taking a probiotic supplement every day.

Probiotics are live microorganisms - bacteria in most cases - that are similar to beneficial microorganisms in your stomach. They are also referred to as "friendly bacteria" or "good bacteria". Probiotic bacterial cultures assist your body's naturally occurring gut flora to reestablish themselves.

Ideally, the microflora colony in the digestive tract should be made up of 85 percent friendly bacteria to 15 percent harmful bacteria. This balance is affected by the use of antibiotics, oral contraceptives, steroids, exposure to radiation (X-rays and radiation therapies), consumption of chlorinated water, refined sugars and other refined foods, and by poor digestion, poor elimination of waste, stress and an unhealthy diet.

When the balance of good and bad bacteria is adversely altered, your body becomes overloaded with toxins, which causes chronic diseases and illnesses. Taking a probiotic supplement and eating foods that include probiotics will help buffer your stomach acid and intestinal bile, increasing the chance of good bacteria surviving.

Benefits of probiotics:

  • Improve digestion of food

  • Enhance absorption of vitamins

  • Produce enzymes

  • Increase availability of vitamins and nutrients, especially Vitamin B, Vitamin K, lactase, fatty acids and calcium

  • Help kill viruses and parasites

  • Increase resistance to infection

  • Inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria

  • Regulate pH value by producing lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide. Increase the acidity of intestine (lower pH value) and inhibit reproduction of many harmful bacteria and yeasts

Probiotics treat the following:

  • Infectious diarrhea and traveler's diarrhea

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Vaginal infections

  • Skin infections

  • Tooth decay

  • Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterium that causes most ulcers and chronic stomach inflammation

  • Reduce symptoms of lactose intolerance

  • Reduce cholesterol levels when high

Foods containing probiotics:

  • Yogurt*

  • Fermented and unfermented milk

  • Miso

  • Tempeh

  • Sauerkraut

  • Some juices and soy beverages

*Not all yogurt contains active bacterial culture. L acidophilus, L bulgaricus and S thermophilus are the most common bacterial strains added in yogurt. These bacteria are on the ingredient list. More labels are stating "live cultures" or "active cultures", which you want to look for. Avoid yogurt that is heat treated after culturing. This means the added bacteria was pasteurized, which can destroy live cultures.

Why you need probiotics:

  • Drinking chlorinated water destroys your intestinal flora

  • Farm animals are fed antibiotics to keep diseases down. When you eat meat, you take in these antibiotics

  • When the ratio of good bacteria to bad is lowered, problems begin to arise such as excessive gas, bloating, constipation, intestinal toxicity and poor absorption of nutrients

  • Alcoholic beverages kill probiotics, encouraging harmful bacteria and yeast overgrowth

  • The use of antibiotics directly kills all bacteria in your intestinal tract. That is why probiotics is recommended while taking antibiotics

  • Birth control pills and many other drugs cause damage to the intestinal flora and to the tissue in the intestinal wall

How to choose probiotics:

You do not need a prescription to take probiotics, as they are available in grocery stores and health food stores. Taking probiotics when your body does not actually need them won't cause you any harm.

Consider the following when looking for a probiotic:

  • The type of bacteria, including the genus and species

  • The potency or number of bacteria per dose

  • The purity

  • Natrol BioBeads is one of the most effective probiotic acidophilus on the market. It doesn't have to be refrigerated and only needs to be taken once a day

Start by taking at least 1-10 billion viable L. acidophilus or B. bifidum cells daily divided into 3 or 4 doses. Take them on an empty stomach or at least 30-60 minutes before eating. Take 15-20 billion viable organisms daily to prevent diarrhea from antibiotics.

Maintaining proper pH balance within the gastrointestinal tract is critical to probiotic growth and health. The pH inside the small intestine should be slightly alkaline (7.5-8.0) and the colon should be slightly acidic (6.0-6.8). Without the correct pH, probiotics won't function properly. In order to achieve and maintain pH balance, it is important to eat the appropriate foods.

Heel Pain and Obesity: The Chicken or the Egg?

A new survey has found that heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis, a problem affecting almost a third of people who are overweight, often limits exercise and therefore makes it difficult for people to lose weight. The survey of 381 adult Americans, conducted by Heeling Solutions LLC, (www.heelingsolutions.com) found that 90% of people with heel pain who exercise at least 1 to 2 times per week report that heel pain limits their physical activity. The survey also found that 69% of people reporting heel pain were interested in losing weight, as compared to 58% of the general public.

Plantar fasciitis is the most common type of heel pain and is an example of a physical condition that can prevent or derail a weight loss program. It usually strikes people when they are increasing the amount of physical activity that they do. Be it a runner training for a marathon, a weekend warrior at a weekend tennis game, or an obese person starting to exercise. The change in the amount of stress put on the heel and foot can lead to plantar fasciitis. This can be especially devastating for overweight people who often develop plantar fasciitis as they begin to see progress in their attempt to lose weight.

"It strikes people of all ages and levels of physical activity," says David Nader, an exercise physiologist and advisor to Heeling Solutions, a company focused on helping patients and their doctors resolve heel pain through education and non-invasive techniques. Plantar fasciitis does not discriminate; even pro-athletes in excellent shape get it. For example Minnesota Vikings receiver Randy Moss, who missed last years Pro Bowl, because of plantar fasciitis, or the Pistons Rasheed Wallace, one of this years key players in the NBA finals, who battled plantar fasciitis since late in the 2004 season.

Though in most cases heel problems are not directly causing obesity, it is clear that resolving heel pain is important to staying healthy and losing weight for a large number of people.

"Some diseases like arthritis, tend to greatly reduce a person ability to exercise, and there is little that one can do about them, however, there are others like plantar fasciitis where that need not be the case," according to Dr. Jeffrey Peterson, physician with the Northern California Institute of Sports Medicine, "Most people can recover from plantar fasciitis using conservative means, which can really make a difference in helping people lose the weight."

Many people needlessly suffer from heel pain for years before they do anything about it. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, it is estimated that 2 million people seek treatment for plantar fasciitis every year in the United States, and it is believed that there are several million more who go untreated and suffer needlessly. In most cases the longer a person waits to seek treatment the longer it will take to get rid of it.

If your heel hurts and it is limiting your ability to exercise, its time to get diagnosed and get on the road to recovery.

Daniel Marein-Efron is a former plantar fasciitis sufferer and President of Heeling Solutions LLC http://www.heelingsolutions.com . Mr. Marein-Efron has been involved with a variety of entrepreneurial businesses through his consulting company DMEX Consulting LLC.

What is the Best Bowling Tip for a Beginner?

Bowling, one of the most popular sports in the world, may seem confusing, but these bowling tips for beginners will go a long way toward helping you feel like a pro in a very short time. This article gives some bowling tips for beginners, from choosing the right ball to use, to playing an actual game. As with all other sports, there is no exact method that must be followed. Each person is different and needs to find the most suitable style with these bowling tips for beginners.

The first bowling tips for beginners involves choosing the right ball. Keep in mind, the sport is based on timing and coordination, meaning you need a ball easy enough to handle. As one of the bowling tips for beginners, we suggest a ball depending on your size and height. Usually, balls for women range from 8 - 15 pounds and for men, they range from 14 - 16 pounds. The best bowling tip for beginners who are looking to choose the correct ball is to bowl with the heaviest ball you can swing comfortably.

A small, but important step in bowling tips for beginners is your bowling stance. Start by gripping the ball with your bowling hand, and rest it in your non-bowling hand (your balance hand). Stand approximately 2 feet from the end of the approach (explained further on in the list of bowling tips for beginners). Stand with your toes pointed straight at your target, while keeping your hips and shoulders parallel and lined up with your feet. Many books containing bowling tips for beginners also refer to this process as squaring up. Bowling tips for beginners cover your approach to the lane.

In our bowling tips for beginners, we suggest you experiment with your delivery of the ball. There are several different deliveries for the average bowler. Bowling tips for beginners gives the subsequent distances as starting points for these particular deliveries:

- 3 step delivery, stand 8 - 10 feet from the foul line.

- 4 step delivery, stand 10 - 12 feet from the foul line.

- 5 step delivery, stand 12 - 16 feet from the foul line.

If your size or your stride is larger than normal, make changes to adjust for this.

Both these factors in bowling tips for beginners, grip and aim, are very important. While keeping a good grip on your ball, bowling tips for beginners advise you to align the ball with your shoulder and, keeping your forearm slightly bent, use your balance hand (non-bowling hand) to balance the ball. Taking a deep breath, then exhale keeping your stomach muscles tight is part of the great bowling tips for beginners and aids your concentration and aim.

The next step in bowling tips for beginners is to hold the ball until goes passed your left foot. The distance after the line of foul is the right time to release the ball. Joe Montana 1979 Draft Day Picks

Joe Montana was born on June 11, 1956 in New Eagle, Pennsylvania. It was evident early on that Montana was going to be a great football player thanks to his athletic prowess as well as his above average intelligence. And standing at 6 foot 2 inches and weighing 200 pounds, Montana also had the perfect body for a top of the line quarterback.

Montana played his high school football at Ringgold High School in the Pittsburgh Steel Valley. In high school Montana was a standout athlete not only on the football field, but also in the games of baseball and basketball. He started two years for the Ringgold football team, and after his senior season he was named to the Parade All American Team.

After high school Montana decided to take his football game to the University of Notre Dame despite receiving several basketball scholarship offers. Although Montana put together a solid career at Notre Dame, he did not put up big enough numbers to make everybody notice. But one thing that he did do during his college career is establish himself as one of the greatest come from behind quarterbacks of all time.

Montana was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 82nd overall pick in the 1979 NFL Draft. Although he did not play a lot his rookie season, by the end of his second year he had become the full time starting quarterback. In 1981 Montana led his team to the first of four Super Bowl victories. In all but one of these Super Bowl wins he was named the Most Valuable Player of the game. For his career Montana passed for 35,124 yards. He also was named to the Pro Bowl team eight times.

It is safe to say that Joe Montana will always be known as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

Minnesota Vikings 2006 Preview

The Minnesota Vikings have won 9 games per season for the past three years. It's been a while since they have broken that mark. Could this year be the one? In the weakened NFC, winning 9 games just might get you into the playoffs. The Vikings caused off-season waves by signing OG Steve Hutchinson. They also let QB Daunte Culpepper go.

Quarterbacks

As mentioned, Daunte Culpepper finally took off. The offense will rest on Brad Johnson's shoulders--yes he's still in the league. It seems like Brad Johnson has been around for quite some time. In fact, he's entering his 14th year in the NFL. Johnson is 38 and there are concerns about his durability. He still has some talent left, but it's fading. The Vikings also need to bring up a solid possible replacement for Johnson. Overall, the quarterback position is about average.

Running Backs

Chester Taylor figures to get the bulk of the carries this season. He's unproven though. He came over from the Ravens where he had 292 yards over 41 carries. He showed some potential, but we will have to see how he does in the starting role. The Vikings need Taylor to be a 1,000 yard rusher. To help him out, the Vikings signed FB Tony Richardson from Kansas City. He's a great blocker and could even be a pass recipient. At the bare minimum, the Vikings should be average in the running game. They have the possibility, thanks to the recent signings including OG Steve Hutchinson, to be above average.

Receivers

Koren Robinson should be the main target for Brad Johnson. This is good and bad. Robinson can get down the field and make some plays. However, he has the untimely ability of dropping critical passes. That's what caused Seattle to let him go--that and a host of personal issues. For shorter routes and critical possessions, Johnson should look to Travis Taylor. He's steady and will get you those critical catches. With a good mix, the Vikings could mix it up in the passing game. While they most likely won't be tearing up the field, they could be slightly above average.

Defense and Special Teams

The linbackers are the weak link in the defense. The Vikings are hoping the changes take, and their linebacker unit steps it up some. The defensive line will feature Pro Bowl snubbed Pat Williams. He had a great season in 2005 and should have been selected to the Pro Bowl--according to many. The secondary is full of veterans, and they could help make the difference. The defense has some work to do, but they could do a good enough job to win games. The special teams got a much-needed boost with the addition of long-time Green Bay Packer Ryan Longwell.

2006 Prediction

The Minnesota Vikings made some great moves in the off-season. If history is any guide, they will win 9 games this season. They have a mixed schedule. Eight of the games--Seattle, New England, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Washington, Carolina, Chicago (twice)--should be tough. Predicting them to win 8-9 games in 2006 is a pretty safe bet.

The Rich Professional Sports Past and Present of a Well Known Southeast City of Ohio

Cincinnati is undoubtedly a city with a rich and interesting history. Many people know that the city was once known as Porkopolis due to the large amount of pork produced in the downtown area. However, what some people fail to realize is that there are many other great things about the city in the past and present as well. For example, orthodontics and braces are also known for their quality and excellence.

In addition to excellence in the field of dentistry, Cincinnati also has a rich tradition in professional sports. Currently there are two major pro sports teams in the city, the Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL). Also, in the now fairly distant past, the Queen City had a basketball team called the Cincinnati Royals, for which NBA hall of famer and University of Cincinnati graduate Oscar Robertson played. In the upcoming paragraphs all three of these interesting professional sports teams will be discussed along with a review of how the two currently existing teams have done in their recent seasons.

The Cincinnati Reds are one of the older teams in professional baseball and in fact used to be known as the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Currently the team plays in the Central division of the National League. In their past the team has had both some excellent success and some truly miserable failures. In fact, from the year 1970 to 1976 the team was given the nickname of "The Big Red Machine", which was a time of unprecedented success for the team that brought two World Series Championships. The most infamous player of all time was Pete Rose, who on talent and achievements alone deserves to be in the hall of fame. However, his partaking in and admitting to gambling on baseball games while playing has barred him from receiving that magnanimous honor.

The other major professional sports team in Cincinnati is the Cincinnati Bengals of professional football. The team has in fact never won a Super Bowl and was closest when Boomer Esiason played at Quarterback, losing in the Super Bowl to San Francisco. Recently the team has found some success under Coach Marvin Lewis, and they in fact have made the playoffs two times in the past five seasons.

Lastly, the Cincinnati Royals used to be a professional basketball team in the city. A local star from the University of Cincinnati named Oscar Robertson, who is now an NBA hall of famer, was the star of the team and they met with a reasonable amount of success. The team in fact had been moved around all over the nation, originating in Rochester then stopping in Cincinnati and Kansas City before making their final stop in Sacramento where they are now known as the Kings.

Despite the fact that most of them are not horribly successful these days, as anyone can tell from the preceding paragraphs, Cincinnati has a very diverse and rich history in professional sports.

Connor Sullivan visited several Cincinnati orthodontics practices for quotes on pricing braces for his children. He visited a Cincinnati braces provider for help straightening his adult teeth.

7 Inexpensive Ways to Rejuvenate Your Master Bedroom

It is actually quite easy to alter the look of ones master bedroom without emptying your bank account. Simply using a little ingenuity on your part will significantly help to enhance the design, and appearance, of your haven away from the stresses and strains of today's busy lifestyles.

1. A good thing to accomplish before your start sprucing up your room is to de-clutter. Unfortunately, most of us tend to use our bedrooms as dumping grounds since they are away from the public eye. So put any items which you do not need away inside tagged containers plus keep these possibly beneath the bed, in a wardrobe or garage or loft.

2. Furthermore one could easily get some vibrant bed comforters in order to pull together all the aspects of the actual designing you have done or if at all possible start with the bed comforter and rethink from there using the colors included within the comforter. You could potentially also buy extra bedding, which can be converted to draperies and lampshades that will accentuate the rest of the rooms interior.

3. Next, why not give the walls a fresh coat of paint? You do not even need to paint the entire room you could potentially just repaint one particular spot (that may be needing restoration), such as the wall behind the bed. But you do not even need to change the color; just about all you have to do is actually paint on a fresh coat of the paint that is currently there. Nevertheless, whether you choose to alter the color or maybe use the same color, you will find that the feel of the bedroom will have improved.

4. Why not look through your drawers for scarves, table linens or pillowcases that compliment the color scheme of your bedroom? Such things may be used to soften the top of a bureau or the edge of ones bedroom table.

5. By introducing fragrance into a room, you will be transforming the way the bedroom feels. In case, however, you do not have any potpourri, then cut up some orange peel and allow it to dry. Once dry, mix this together with whatever sweet spices you have (say cinnamon, ginger or all spice) and place it in a open bowl in your bedroom to freshen it up.

6. Find some little-used baskets and suspend these up in the nooks and corners of your master bedroom. Not only will they bring style to the bedroom, but also can provide you with extra space for storage as well.

7. A great way to get a new appearance and feel for a bedroom cheaply is as simple as buying a brand new lamp or even just a lamp shade. Choose a color and style which will compliment the style of your room. Such an item may be used to highlight the color design of your respective room also.

It is important to bear in mind the bedroom is a spot in which we spend much of our downtime. So why not devote some time creating a haven for yourself that will certainly not break your budget?

Can the New York Giants Win the Super Bowl in 2010?

The New York Giants started off the 09' season well. While they are one of the favorites to come out of the NFC, it won't be easy by any means. Eli Manning has stepped out of old brother Peyton Manning's shadow with his own Super Bowl ring. The NFC East is one of the most competitive divisions in football and winning it will be an accomplishment without a doubt. The Giants have all the necessary components for a winning football team, good defense, good running game and a Pro Bowl quarterback.

The New York Giants have many talented outlets to choose from - WR Steve Smith, TE Kevin Boss, RB Ahmad Bradshaw, RB Brandon Jacobs, and WR Mario Manningham. When the Giants went on their Super Bowl run of 07' not many expected them to do much once they were in the playoffs. This year could provide the Giants with the same opportunity - many favor the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles ahead of the Giants at this time.

The most important wins will be winning against the division rivals - this is because the NFC East division could possible end in a tie. For example, both the Giants and Eagles finish 11-5 - the tie breaker goes to who won the head to head meetings. Every game is so critical in the NFC East division and the Giants can not fall behind early in the season.

Eli Manning has grown up over the last couple of seasons and has become a leader on the field like his old brother - maybe not to the same extent but he is well respectable now. Eli Manning seems to play better on the road then at home, which can be a blessing or a curse, not quite sure. The Giants have the potential, like a few other teams, to make it far into the playoffs if they gain some momentum.

The New York Giants forum at RootZoo is alive and well. Head on over for some free fantasy football, where you earn real cash for winning your league.

Steve Young - USFL Pro Football Career & Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars Football Career

Steve Young is a very accomplished athlete who has extended his relevance in the game football by making a career out of being a popular on air television personality for the ESPN network. While a younger generation of football fans may be most familiar with Young for his current work as a commentator on ESPN Monday Night Football post game shows fans old enough to remember his playing days know that he was truly something special on the gridiron. Long before Steve Young became a Super Bowl MVP in 1995 with the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL he was a prominent player for the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars and later a poster boy for the upstart USFL spearheaded by Donald Trump to compete with the NFL.

After being dubbed a high school athletic prodigy out of Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut Steve Young, a three sport star in high school (football, basketball, and baseball), moved across the country to continue his football career at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. Young who was initially considered a run first and throw second type of quarterback worked hard to overcome his shortcomings at passing the ball. Young, who played quarterback for an option run style offense in high school, eventually made his weakness his strength to the point that by his senior season he set an NCAA single season record by completing 71.3% of his throws.

The First Team All-American quarterback at BYU led an explosive offense that thanks to efficient quarterback play established a new NCAA record for total offense as the squad averaged 584.2 yards per game while racking up an 11-1 record. Despite finishing second in the voting for the Heisman Trophy to running back Mike Rozier of Nebraska Steve Young did receive other noteworthy accolades including the Davey O'Brien Award given annually to the best quarterback. Young completed his college career in style by tossing the game winning touchdown in a Holiday Bowl win against the University of Missouri in 1983. The pass that gave BYU the 21-17 win was the tail end of a trick flea flicker play. Young would later be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

The upstart USFL (United States Football League) was just getting off the ground when Young was prepared to turn pro in 1984. While the established NFL still seemed like the direction the game would head for the long term the USFL was successfully picking off star players to join their league and Steve Young was amongst the young talent that was lured by lucrative contracts to suit up for the less established brand. Young signed what was at the time considered an extremely lucrative deal in the form of a $40 million annuity contract in exchange for agreeing to play for the Los Angeles Express for ten years.

The career Steve Young had in the USFL was shorter than scheduled as a result of the owner of the team he played for going bankrupt in Young's second season. Financial debacles caused embarrassing lapses in the integrity of the league including bus drivers refusing to drive teams to games after paychecks bounced and players simply not showing up. Interestingly, due to the structure of the original contract that Steve Young agreed to he is still being paid from that original contract and will continue to be every year through 2027. Due to the annuity nature of the original $40 million contract Young was scheduled to be paid $1 million a year for 40 years. Even though the now defunct league officially shut down in 1986 litigation proved successful in eventually guaranteeing that Young be paid the annuity value he was promised.

Steve Young would go on to sign with an abysmal Tampa Bay Buccaneers team in the NFL and suffer a 3-16 record as a starter over two seasons before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers were he was mentored by the great Joe Montana while serving as his backup. Young went on to have a prolific NFL career despite wasted time in the USFL and with the Buccaneers. Looking back on the NFL success of Steve Young the two-time MVP who has the record for highest passing rating to go along with a Super Bowl ring is considered one of the top quarterbacks in the history of the game. In 2005 Young was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Sam, the man who penned this piece, is admittedly jealous of Steve Young who with an abundance of time and money on his hands spends some time on the golf course when he's not with his family which is comprised of his former model wife Barbara and their four children (two sons and two daughters). The appropriate go to golf accessory for someone like Steve Young is a BYU golf bag. If anyone should be proud to play eighteen holes with a Brigham Young University golf bag it should be Steve Young who is the great-great-great grandson of Brigham Young himself.

Aaron Massey #53 Jordan High School

Aaron Massey is son of former NFL and Pro Bowl participant Robert Massey. Aaron is #53 and played Offensive Tackle with the frame of a Linebacker. He was a late developer on the grid iron but has rapidly improved as a massive athlete over the past few years. He is very strong in the weight room and a terror on the wrestling mat. His brother, Robert Jr. played as a freshman at Livingstone college this past season and was named the Rookie of the Year in the CIAA conference. Robert Jr. had a career day against his dad's CIAA championship team, The Bears of Shaw University where he racked up 18 tackles, 2 sacks a few QB hurries and an interception for Six. Next up for Aaron Massey will be deciding on what University he will attend. Already knocking out the academics, he has put himself in position to participate as a freshman. This young man has a bright future ahead of himself.

Brawn Over Brains - Philip Rivers, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Toughness In Pro Sports

Picture this scenario: two secretaries get hired by a well-known law firm, and work there for several years. One (let's call him Phil) is somewhat of an underachiever, and is notorious for his surly attitude. The other (let's call him LT) represents the firm with class and dignity, and is the most efficient worker they've ever had. One day, they both come down with injuries while typing. Phil has a torn ligament in his wrist, while LT is in the early stages of developing carpal tunnel syndrome. They both need time off, but the firm's biggest client goes on trial in one week. Phil decides to fight through his tremendous pain, because the person who would take over his work (William E. Volek) isn't trusted by anybody in the firm. LT takes the necessary time off, comforted by the fact that his replacement is infinitely better than Phil's, and can help the company get through its busy time. After the trial, everyone hails Phil's courage, even though the damage in his wrist is so severe that he might not be able to work when they next need him. LT is condemned for his choice, even though he decreased his risk of suffering a long-term injury by getting adequate rest. Despite the fact that LT is an all-time great secretary, and had only called in sick once before in his career, he will forever be remembered for failing to come through in that one week, and his years of hard work become tainted in the process.

Seems kind of rough, no? How many of us would do what LT did, and make sure to avoid long-term injury in order to continue earning a good living for their family? This situation came to fruition this past Sunday in the AFC Championship Game, when San Diego's future Hall-of-Fame running back, LaDainian Tomlinson, carried the ball only twice against New England due to a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee. Their inconsistent quarterback, Philip Rivers, played the whole game with a completely torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, and actually had preliminary surgery six days before in a last ditch effort to play. It's possible that he won't be back in time for their next training camp, as recovery time for this injury can last up to eight months. As expected, Rivers has been universally hailed for his courage, while Tomlinson has been lambasted by fans and media members alike. The obvious question that emerges is this: why do we expect so much from pro athletes? In no other area of life would we debate this dilemma. If you have an injury, and it's going to affect your production, you take time off to heal. Case closed. However, if you play pro sports, and especially pro football, it isn't enough to just be good at your job. You also have to have a level of toughness that's acceptable to not only your teammates, but to the millions of people on their couches who watch and criticize what you do.

We as fans always expect a superhuman effort from our athletes. We demand it, since they charge us so much for tickets, and especially since the athletes get paid such ludicrous amounts of money. So this past Sunday, everyone wanted to see the Chargers play the Patriots with their full complement of starters. We wanted LaDainian to tough it out, since his presence would have made the game better. The problem is that there are plenty of instances when athletes did risk it all, and never were the same again. We always seem to forget that Bill Walton felt such pressure to play through injury that he went against his personal beliefs in the '78 playoffs and took pain killers in order to deal with his foot problems. We also seem to forget that over the next five years, he missed 3 full seasons, and played in only 14 and 33 games in the other two. We also forget that NFL players are more prone to depression, arthritis, and an assortment of other mental and physical problems when their careers are over, because they take risks similar to the one Rivers took. So while I respect Rivers' toughness, I can't use his decision as a reason to fault Tomlinson. Because there is no right or wrong way to deal with this dilemma. If Rivers felt like the risk was worth it, and LaDainian didn't, then who are we to tell them otherwise? Only one thing is certain - next year, if LaDainian continues to break records, while Rivers struggles to make it back from his injury, people will finally acknowledge the complexity of this issue, which isn't as clear-cut as it's currently being presented.

If You Lose Your Job, All You Have To Do Is Get Another One In Our "Wonderful" Economy

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported a low unemployment rate for years. Behind these reports are articles about 50 percent of all young blacks in the inner city being unemployed and another story about 33 percent of all who lost their jobs after age 55 never finding another one. A local church bulletin carried this notation for a long time - " Success is reaching Social Security age before having to declare bankruptcy. The Consumer Bankruptcy Project found that the rate at which older Americans - those 65 years of age or older - filed for bankruptcy increased 213 percent between 1991 and 2001. The steepest increase in Chapter 7 filings occurred among people older than 55. In 2002, the percentage of Americans older than 45 who entered bankruptcy reached 39 percent up from 27 percent in 1994, the study found.

Another report says that 47 percent of all small business people maxed out their credit cards trying to keep their business afloat in an economic arena of unfair trade. Many eventually suffered usury rates at up to 35 percent interest. Apparently many bankruptcies are not based on just consumers overspending but basic survival. Today many who believed in the Free Enterprise system and the American Dream have to take a bankruptcy education course before filing for bankruptcy. This new law was passed by politicians with many being "double dippers" getting both a salary and a retirement income while in the private sector have to take this course after being in business for many years.

However, the most striking counter statistic is this. Only about 40 percent of all workers in the U.S. qualify for unemployment insurance. The other 60 percent are in some sort of economic limbo. They either do not work long enough at one job or make enough money in any given period to qualify. ( We also do not know how everything adds up with some people working up to four jobs at one time. It appears the BLS reports one job equals one worker. )

The Bureau of Labor Statistics stop using the unemployment offices in their reporting due to this. Which leaves us with this final conclusion. We do not need any conspiracy theories to know the unemployment reporting is a managed system and a single mother making only a $100 a month is considered employed. This would have been laughable during the 1970s. Then the laughter would have turned to something more serious and Congressional hearing would been called. Now in the current economic arena, nothing has been done to expose this terrible void.

The BSL finally admitted about five years ago that many are missing in action from any kind of reporting giving up searching for a job. They put this figure at just 4 million while the streets tells us there must be many more than just 4 million. Hurricane Katrina in News Orleans exposed a vast under class living in a silent depression. The same could apply across our land.

It is difficult to find out many many jobs are full time ones. From what we have studied only about 88 million jobs are full time which confirms there is an economic limbo out there with a labor force of at least double that number. Studying the way the unemployment rate is gathered is another story.
Reportedly, the BSL gets their results by a random statistical calling of 50,000 households a month.

The person answering the phone is asked if they looked for a job in the past month. If they say no, they are counted as employed. If a person says they are helping out in the family business or on the family farm without any pay, while they are looking for a regular job, they too are considered employed. We welcome anyone to tell us we are wrong and we wish we were wrong. The Get America Working Forum says 50 percent of U.S. human resources are not being used. The term underemployment has faded away.

Meanwhile the media keep telling us how good the economy is with our low unemployment rates. They tell us how well the stock market is doing too. However, once upon a time, companies stocks values would increase based on how many people companies could hire while still making a decent profit. Today the stock values are now based on people getting fired instead of hired. Some American companies now have only about 10 percent of their workforce in America. The stock values rise as more low paid foreign workers are hired. As consumers shop their jobs away at places like Walmart.

President Clinton confirmed Free Trade with the passing of NAFTA and GATT trade agreements. President Bush followed affirming it was nothing personal for it was only business in getting Fast Track passed which makes the Executive Branch the CEO of world trade. President Bush tells us the Mexican workers come to the United States to take jobs American will not do. He neglects to tell us that Mexico reports low unemployment rates too and apparently, there are many jobs in Mexico that Mexican workers will not take. The more than 4000 factories that were moved from the USA to Mexico evidently did not help the Mexican economy that much. It created a new working poor class in the USA and an impoverished working class in Mexico. Now many of these factories are moving out of Mexico to places like China because the Chinese will take jobs that Mexican workers will not do. The Globalist Free Traders want a world economy without borders. They say it will spread prosperity but in reality, they are spreading poverty because there will always be someone who will work for less for down to the levels of wage slave and even child labor.

Today, we can travel for miles across our cities and view the vacant factories and stores while the government tells us happy days are here again with the greeters at Walmart welcoming us to spend money of products made in far away places while our local value added economies have been chopped up into pieces as relics of another time. Our industrial might won World War 2 and restored local value added economies in Europe and Asia through the Marshall Plan. Lawrence Taylor - 1981 Draft Day Picks

Lawrence Taylor was born February 4, 1959 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Throughout his career, Taylor was also known as “LT.” But no matter what people called him, one thing was for sure. When Taylor hit the field he was always one of the best players on it. Not only did he have all of the physical skills to be a great player, but his will to win also helped him immensely throughout his career.

After high school Taylor decided to take his game to the University of North Carolina. It was during college that the nation began to take notice of just how good of a player he was. While at the school Taylor set many defensive records, and had several great seasons. He capped off his college career with 16 sacks in his final season with the Tar Heels. Later on in his career the university decided to retire Taylor’s number 98 jersey.

In the 1981 NFL Draft, Taylor was selected in the first round with the second overall pick. From his very first year it was evident that he was going to be a great player in the league. During his rookie campaign he was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press, and also received the award for the Defensive Rookie of the Year by the NFL. And it is safe to say that Taylor did not stop there. Up until the time that he retired in 1993, Taylor made 10 Pro Bowl Teams and won many other awards.

All in all, Lawrence Taylor will always be known as one of the greatest linebackers to ever play the game of football. His tenacity on the field was what made him great, and the younger players of today are always trying to duplicate his bone crushing hits.

The Rich History of America's Team

The Dallas Cowboys are “America’s Team”. Year after year their popularity soars. They are known the world over as a great National Football League franchise and as the team that is cheered on by “America’s Sweethearts”, the world famous Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. It is due to their success on and off the field that the team has such a legion of loyal fans and that the Dallas Cowboys history is so rich and storied.

The city of Dallas, Texas, was granted an NFL franchise on January 28, 1960. The start of a sports dynasty had begun. The team, first known as the Dallas Steers, then the Dallas Rangers, settled on the nickname the Cowboys. The formation of the Texas NFL expansion team didn’t get off to a very smooth start. The owner of the Washington Redskins had, for several decades, enjoyed a monopoly in the Southern States of the US a monopoly he wasn’t ready to give up. So the soon to be owners of the Texas expansion team went out and bought the rights to the Redskins fight song, "Hail to the Redskins". The Redskins owner quickly changed his mind and the Texas expansion team came into being. This early confrontation sparked a rivalry between the two franchises which continues to this day.

Tom Landry was hired as the first Dallas Cowboys coach of the the new team which ended their first season winless. The following year, the Cowboys selected Bob Lilly in their first NFL draft selection and in this year as well the the Cowboys' tasted their first victory. The Dallas Cowboys continued to improve and by 1966 they had their first winning season and their first playoff appearance, the first of eight straight playoff appearances (which they would later surpass with nine straight appearances in 1983). By the mid point of their first decade the Dalls Cowboys had become a powerful force in the NFL and sent eight players to the Pro Bowl. For the next 30 years the Cowboys would show their dominance in the NFL.

The 1970s got off to a great start as the Cowboys made it to their first Super Bowl, Super Bowl V. Unfortunately their first appearance ended in defeat. The 1971 season marked the teams move from the Cotton Bowl, in Dallas to their newly built home, Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas. The legendary Roger Staubach was named starting quarterback for the Cowboys midway through the season and the team found themselves making their second Super Bowl appearance. Super Bowl VI would be different as the team led by an MVP performance by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Staubach would become Superbowl Champions for the first time. The Cowboys were now beginning to grow in popularity not just in Dallas, but nationwide.

In 1974 the Cowboys stumbled and missed the playoffs for the first time in eight years. The next year they made some good draft choices and with their new talent found themselves in Super Bowl X. They went down to defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Super Bowl victory would come again to the Dallas Cowboys in 1977 as they defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII to once again become Superbowl Champions. It was at this point in Dallas Cowboys history that the team was dubbed "America's Team" by an NFL films editor. It is a title that has stuck through all the team’s ups and downs despite opposition from non-Cowboys fans. The 1970s glory days for the Cowboys would end with one final trip to the Super Bowl, Super Bowl XIII. . Again the team would lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the 1980’s the Dallas Cowboys returned to the playoffs 5 times and won 2 Division Championships. The team however failed to claim a single Conference Championship in the 1980s, despite playing in the NFC championship game 3 consecutive years. They did not return to the Super Bowl in this decade. As the decade came to a close the ownership of the Cowboys changed, Tom Landry the only coach in Cowboys history was fired, Jimmy Johnson became the new Dallas Cowboys coach and Troy Aikman was drafted.

The Cowboys drafted running back, Emmitt Smith in 1990, and the trifecta of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith, and wide receiver Michael Irvin was set. In 1991, the Cowboys made the playoffs for the first time in six years. In 1992, the Dallas Cowboys went on to victory in Super Bowl XXVII and the following year were Superbowl Champions again in Super Bowl XXVIII.The Cowboys sent an NFL record 11 players to the Pro Bowl in 1993. After a falling out, Jimmy Jones was fired and the days of glory would soon draw to a close but not before one more Super Bowl victory. The Cowboys would get their revenge and defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX.

In the new millenium the woes of the Dallas Cowboys were being attributed to its owner Jerry Jones and his refusal to hire a strong coach. In 2003, however, he did just that as Bill Parcells was lured out of retirement to coach the Cowboys. November 2004 saw a vote that determined the Dallas Cowboys new stadium in Arlington, Texas would be built and ready for play in 2009. The Cowboys finished an up-and-down 2005 season in 3rd place in the NFC East. After five games into the 2006 season Tony Romo took over as the starter Dallas Cowboys quarterback. The team made it to a wild card matchup but their efforts fell short in a crushing loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
At the conclusion of the Cowboys’ season Bill Parcells resigned.Wade Phillips, former San Diego defensive coordinator will take over the coaching duties for the Cowboys as they put this season behind them and strive to move forward. Based on the Dallas Cowboys history they will no doubt rise again to glory, they are afterall, America’s Team.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2008

There is no greater individual honor in professional football than being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame located in Canton, Ohio. The greatest football players of all time have been so honored and memorabilia from the greatest games of all time reside inside the walls of the Hall of Fame. Each year there is a new class of hall of fame inductees that have been voted in based on the impact they have made on the game of pro football. The Hall of Fame class of 2008 included some of the great players from a variety of different eras.

Fred Dean

San Diego Chargers (1975-81)

San Francisco 49ers (1981-85)

After a stellar season at Louisiana Tech University, Fred Dean spent eleven seasons in the NFL, six and a half with the San Diego Chargers and five and a half with the San Francisco 49ers. Dean was a solid defensive tackle while with the Chargers but really came into his own with the 49ers. He would go on to rack up 93 sacks during his career and be named to four Pro Bowl teams. Winning two Super Bowl rings with San Francisco was the nice end to a great career.

Darrell Green

Washington Redskins (1983-02)

One of only two players ever to play twenty seasons with the same team, the other being fellow Hall of Famer Jackie Slater of the Rams, Darrell Green showed he was truly one of the best defensive backs to ever play the game. Known widely for his speed, having won the NFL's Fastest Man competition on numerous occasions, there were few quarterbacks that looked forward to going up against the Redskins and their start cornerback. He would be named to the Pro Bowl seven different times (1984, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1996, 1997) and would win two Super Bowl rings. Darrell Green would retire from football in 2002 the holder of many records including: Most consecutive seasons with an interception (19), oldest NFL cornerback (42), oldest player to return an interception for a touchdown (37), most games played by a defensive player (295), and the fastest 40 yard dash time of any player in NFL history (4.09 seconds in 1986).

Art Monk

Washington Redskins (1980-93)

New York Jets (1994)

Philadelphia Eagles (1995)

Art Monk was noted for his amazing consistency over the course of his career as a wide receiver in the National Football League. He made his greatest impact with the Washington Redskins in the early 1980's catching passes from quarterback Joe Theismann. He would go on to win three Super Bowl rings and be named to the NFL's 1980s All-Decade Team. Monk was the first player to catch a touchdown pass in 15 consecutive seasons, the first player to catch more than 900 career receptions, and at the time of his retirement was the all time pass receiving leader.

Emmitt Thomas

Kansas City Chiefs (1966-78)

Emmitt Thomas was a long shot to become an inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame considering he graduated from Bishop College in 1966 and was not drafted by any team in either the National Football League or the American Football League. Thomas would go on to be named to five Pro Bowl teams, win a Super Bowl championship, and retire as the Chiefs' team leader in career interceptions (58). He would go on to have a long career as an assistant coach in the NFL and two of the players he coached while with the Washington Redskins, Art Monk and Darrell Green, were also inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008.

Andre Tippett

New England Patriots (1982-93)

Ranked consistently as one of the best linebackers in the league during the 1980s, Andre Tippett was a true force to be reckoned with on the football field. He would finish his career with an even 100 quarterback sacks and had been voted onto the Pro Bowl team on five different occasions. He is a member of the NFL's 1980s All-Decade Team and was named the 1985 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He has also been honored as a member of the Patriots' 35th Anniversary Team and was also inducted into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame.

Gary Zimmerman

Los Angeles Express (1984-85)

Minnesota Vikings (1986-92)

Denver Broncos (1993-97)

Gary Zimmerman is in rare company as one of the few people to have been members of the now-defunct United States Football League to also be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (joining Reggie White, Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Marv Levy, and Sid Gillman). Zimmerman was selected to be on the Pro Bowl team seven times during his career and named an All-Pro at his position on 9 different occasions. As an example of Gary Zimmerman's ability to play consistently at a very high level, he holds the distinction of having been named to both the 1980s NFL All-Decade Team and the 1990s NFL All-Decade Team.

Being named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame is the highest individual honor a football player can achieve. Membership in this elite group means just that, that the player is truly elite in terms of their football ability and the impact they had on the game. These six members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted in 2008 have all shown that they are truly worthy of such an honor. Congratulations is indeed in order for Fred Dean, Darrell Green, Art Monk, Emmitt Thomas, Andre Tippett, and Gary Zimmerman.

Top 10 Dumbest Things Pro Athletes Do

There seems to be an endless stream of idiotic things professional athletes do. I guess if you put a bunch of young men together, give them a boat-load of money and lots of free time, what can you expect? When beautiful women, the media and the luxuries of life are thrown at them, their cockiness and stupidity are only amplified. Here are my top ten, but of course there are lots more. However, we must always remember, they are only human too.

1. Me Make Good Play!

Ever see NFL players beat their chest like a gorilla after they just made a good play? I guess it’s a Tarzan thing or something, but they look kinda ridiculous. Maybe if I was out there on the field and I was a 170-pound kicker watching a defensive lineman beating his chest after a sack, I may be a little intimidated, but overall, they look really silly doing it. (I attended a professional all-women’s football game this year and saw a 350-pound woman do this, which was particularly scary.)

2. The God Factor, Part I

I hate it when players point up to Heaven and thank God after a good play too. Bear in mind however, that I am not criticizing religion or anyone for having faith in God. But this just looks lame. It happens a lot in MLB for some reason. A strikeout will cause Pedro Martinez to do the chest-touch and double-index-finger-point to God as if he and God were chatting earlier about possible pitching strategies in the locker room, and the strategy they chose together worked, so he had to personally thank God using his direct line.

3.The God Factor, Part II

Locker rooms, sidelines, dugouts, bullpens, and court sides are often full of praying men. One question: “If you are praying to win, and your opponent is praying to win, who does God choose?

4. Bad Boys, Bad Boys, Whatcha Gonna Do When They Come For You?

Why do pro jocks get arrested for drug and/or gun possession so much? Of course, lots of people do this one unfortunately, we just happen to hear about the famous athletes who do. C’mon guys, keep the drugs at home, stop driving while high, and for crying out loud, stop packin’! You don’t need a gun. Who’s going to harm you? You’re six six and weigh 275 pounds!

5. It Wasn’t Me!

Telling Congress you don’t do steroids, then getting caught doing steroids is pretty dumb. I loved watching the clips where Rafael Palmero sat pointing a finger at the Congressional hearing stating with disgust and confidence, “I do not take steroids.” And then the next clip showing him apologizing profusely for taking steroids.

6. I Love You To Death

Murdering ex-lovers doesn’t happen very often fortunately, but my list wouldn’t be complete without at least mentioning O.J.

7. Rabbits

It seems that there are a lot of NBA players out there who use the phrase, “My baby’s mom” a little too often. And there’s too many pro athletes’ offspring introducing their buddies as “My brother from another mother.” Ever hear of a condom?

8. How Much Bling Bling Do You Need!?

It’s fascinating to watch professional athletes blow through all their millions in their first year or two and then have nothing left at retirement, which is usually only a few years later. How many fifty-year-olds are still playing pro sports? Not many (minus golfers of course, who will drag their canes and oxygen tanks with them on the fairway). So why don’t pro athletes save a couple of bucks?

9. Love My Hog

It’s not too smart to get injured off the job when you’re a pro athlete. Cleveland Browns Kellen Winslow Jr. crashed his motorcycle recently and will now miss the 2005 NFL season. Jay Williams, a number one draft pick of the Chicago Bulls, also got into a motorcycle accident and has not played since. What’s with motorcycles anyhow? Talk about killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

10. “When You Come To a Fork in the Road, Take It” – Yogi Berra

Saying really dumb things in the media seems to be a particularly easy thing to do if you’re a professional athlete. I looked in a lot of places online to come up with a good list here. My problem was that there were so many good ones, I wasn’t sure which ones to pick. But here are a few gems:

a. Paul Hamm, Gymnast: "I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father."

b. Baseball player Tito Fuentes, after getting hit by a pitch: “They shouldn't throw at me. I'm the father of five or six kids."

c. Football coach Ray Malavasi: "I don't care what the tape says. I didn't say it."

d. Baseball player Dizzy Dean, after a 1-0 game: "The game was closer than the score indicated."

e. Boxing Analyst: "Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them really that serious."

f. Soccer commentator: "Julian Dicks is everywhere. It's like they've got eleven Dicks on the field."

g. Bill Cowher, Pittsburgh Steelers coach: "We're not attempting to circumcise rules."

h. Jim Wohford: "Ninety percent of the game is half mental."

i. Joe Theismann: "Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein."

j. Charles Shackleford of the NCSU basketball team: "Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. I'm amphibious."

k. Shaquille O'Neal, on his lack of championships: "I've won at every level, except college and pro."

As I already asked before, what can we expect from professional athletes? They often reflect society as a whole. Too much time, money and fame at a really young age can augment stupidity, simple as that. We all say and do dumb things, but thankfully, we don’t have microphones and video cameras pointed at us all the time. As Norman Einstein used to say, “Really smart athletes stay away from problems because they can predict the future with their ESPN.”
